Here is a painting based on The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Anderson. I sort of fell in love with an illustration of this story in the big fairy tale book I had as a kid. This is a little slice of that image.

Anyway, here's my version:

To truly appreciate it you must be 5 inches tall, but you can take a virtual tour.

I was at a loss as to what to get my grandmother for her birthday, but as she is fond of cats, I thought of this silly poem of Edward Lear's: The Owl and the Pussycat.

I think it might prove to be hard to make myself work in the mornings independently, but it's something I need to do. I have to keep reminding myself of that.

Audrey Kawasaki paints beautiful, luminous figures. Her sketches make me jealous too.

Here are some of my favourites:

Look at these elaborate cities made of paper by BĂ©atrice Coron. My favourite is Water City. I love the enormous birds.

This piece depicts the Tam Lin ballad. I wish I knew what else to say without sounding apologetic. I'm not completely pleased with the way it all turned out, but I think the sheer number of figures I depicted was a good exercise for me.

Heh, I suppose this, from Leonard Cohen's Anthem is probably a good philosophy for me to have:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

This is a gift for Melissa. I don't think she ever checks this thing anymore though so it is probably safe to post. She said she wanted a painting, but I don't know if she will be into this kind of thing I've been doing lately. Let's hope so! She won't get it until she returns from her job abroad anyway, which is quite a while from now still unfortunately.

Sarah Mensinga's artwork has such a delightful sense of mischief in it. She does a lot of wonderful character sketches at her blog.

My especial favourite is a wonderful story she has written and illustrated about a girl raised by dragons. The characters in her drawings are so expressive and I love the sassy attitude of the dragon girl.

Take a long look at the beautiful fantasy artwork of Amandine Labarre. I assure you, you won't be disappointed.

I have seen the dissected book art before, but these books that sprout flowers and scenery are really quite astonishingly beautiful. I find paper art very fascinating for some reason. Perhaps it's the delicacy.
